Business ethics have been under scrutiny since we have entered a the 21st century. In fact, many consumers factor in a corporation's ethics and social responsibility, when deciding if they will purchase from them or not. In fact, businesses have begun to take this matter very seriously, and have set up ethics hotlines. In this article I will explain to you exactly what ethics hotlines are, and the reasoning behind them. Let me outline a scenario for you. Let's say one day at the job you notice one of your coworkers doing something unethical. Perhaps they are even sexually harassing another employee. However, you feel uncomfortable bringing this up in person, or asking questions to determine if the person is actually guilty of sexual harassment. What do you do? If your company or organization has an ethics hotline set up, you can anonymously report your concern, as well as ask any questions that are puzzling you and that you are not comfortable talking about in person. The fact is, ethics hotlines are not just reserved for workers in the company. In fact, many organizations urge their customers call their ethics hotline, if they have felt they have been unethically treated by the company's employees. Many businesses realize the need to run a smooth and ethical operation, and create an ethical environment. To make sure this happens, there needs to be a set of checks and balances. And ethics hotline is a perfect way for the organization to protect itself against behavior that is inappropriate or illegal. The success of an ethics hotline depends upon the person's ability to remain anonymous. Otherwise, it will not be as effective as it should. In the past, these ethics hotlines were set up to be used by calling a telephone number. However, nowadays there are many different web-based applications that you can use as ethics hotline. However, just setting up an ethics hotline does not mean that your problem is solved. If you're going to go this route, you have to make sure that you respond to the feedback you're given, and not just simply acknowledge it and then do nothing about it. You have to make whoever is responsible for receiving the feedback from the hotline to be accountable for acting upon it. In conclusion, I have given you some information on what an ethics hotline is, and how to get the most out of it.
